IDENTITY, SELF, AND THE WORLD: Learning from Adults with Developmental Disabilities

DW_book_edition4_TOCThe second edition of this little book of essays by David Wizansky, with cover art by Claude Fourel, artist at Gateway Arts and resident of Specialized Housing’s first house (and oldest resident!) is a compendium of David’s thoughts and observations.

David writes: “For more than forty years I have been advisor to a self-advocacy group and have had the good fortune to associate with people described as having a developmental disability or intellectual impairment…I have come to deeply respect these people who have accomplished so much with somewhat limited personal resources. We have more similarities than differences.”

“I saw you at the AANE conference and you kindly gave me a copy of Identity, Self, and the World, I started to read it and didn’t put it down until I had  reached the end!! It is beautifully written — exquisite and thoughtful. I am telling everyone they must have your book…”

Joint Center for Housing Studies paper

Robert Schafer, Developer and Attorney, who has been part of the Specialized Housing team since 1983, wrote the paper “Supportive Living Environments for the Developmentally Disabled”, published by the Joint Center for Housing Studies, detailing the model used by Specialized Housing. The figures used as examples are no longer relevant to the Greater Boston area, but may be in other parts of the US.
