Lauren Garrett: Inspired to empower

BROOKLINE, MA — We’re excited to introduce you to Lauren Garret, the program manager at Specialized Housing’s very first house, whose passion for working with people with disabilities began with a personal connection. Her professional journey from special education to helping adults live meaningful, independent lives is truly inspiring. Read on to get a glimpse into Lauren’s world and the incredible impact she makes every day.

What inspired you to start working with people with disabilities?

I grew up with an aunt with Down syndrome. So I have always felt connected to the community by association. After starting work in special education in my early 20s, my passion and awareness of the specific issues facing people with disabilities grew. I wanted to advocate for this community far beyond the world of public education. I wanted to help people live independent and meaningful lives as adults.

Take us through a typical work day.

I’m usually greeted by residents, who are relaxing on the front porch, or chilling in the living room. Their genuine joy at my arrival is my favorite part of the day. After checking through emails and voicemails, I typically go on community errands with residents, such as appointments, personal shopping, and salon visits (my favorite). Dinnertime is my favorite part of the day. Whether discussing music and movies stars of the past, or voting on house rules, there's never a dull moment at the dinner table.

What is the most inspiring part of your work at SHI?

The residents of this house recognize their accomplishments, and are proud of the imprint they have made in the community. That pride didn’t take long to wear off on me. Over the course of 41 years, they have built deep friendships and have carried each other through all of life’s adult stages.Their strength, resilience, and sense of community are truly inspiring.

Do you have a favorite story from your time working with the SHI community?

I loved watching the total eclipse with the residents! Sharing a once-in-a-lifetime experience with them was very special.

We’d love to learn more about your interests. Could you share something about a non-work hobby or passion?

I love traveling and reading. I’ve always been curious about other cultures and history, and traveling blends both of those interests. I’ve explored ancient cities in Croatia (which doubled as Game of Thrones sets), and sat on the Cliffs of Moher. I also enjoy reading romance novels and mysteries.

As you are a Chiefs fan, we’re curious if you have any thoughts about Travis and Taylor?!

Welcome to the team, Taylor! Without a doubt she has widened the fanbase, and I am here for it. We already had the loudest stadium in the NFL. And now with Taylor’s influence, we’ll be holding that title a little longer. GO CHIEFS!!!
